Was a public art intervention project designed and coordinated by Procur.arte in partnership with the municipalities of Bombarral, Leira, Louriñha, and Torres Vedras.
Beetween April and November 2022, people were invited to visit photography exhibitions in the streets and squares of these municipalities.
This project challenged the artists to create new reading of this territory, taking the concpet of the flaneur as a starting point and this region as an ever-changing social kaleidoscope as a physical context. The aim is to promote a contemporary reading of the territory through artistic creation and photography.
Blaudelaire defined the flâneur as “someone who talks through the city in order to experience it”. Walter Benjamin describes the flâneur as a product of modern life, a botanist of the asphalt, and the city as the sacred ground of flânerie. Since then, the concpet of the flâneur has been used as a tool to understand urban phenomena and modernity in cultural, economic and social terms.
FLÂNEUR AO CENTRO is freely is freely inspired by the work and career of the architect Ernesto Korrodi, who carried out several projects in mainland Portugal, starting in Leiraç. Korrodi, is a Swiss citizen who became a naturalised Portuguese citizen, was a pioneer of Art Noveau, and was awarded two Valmor prizes.
In addition to his cultural heritage studies, he designed public buildings, houses, farms and theatres in the region.
The typical flora and fauna of the region (grapes, pears, apples, figs, etc.) are present throughout his work, both in the stonework and in the wrought iron and furniture. With Ernesto Korrodi’s wandering spirit as a leitmotif, we invited four aritists - Catarina Bothello, Fàbio Cunha, Joshua Phillips and Róisín White - to re-read the region and rediscover this magical land.
